Scientific interpretations of discursive competence in teaching a foreign language to students of higher and secondary education

Kozlova A.N.

Abstract

The paper presents a diachronic analysis of existing concepts of discursive competence and features of its formation among college students. Two stages of discursive competence (DC) studies are considered, including Western and domestic linguistic studies. The stages of development of the concept of discursive competence are traced based on the theory of communicative competence of D. Haims and N. Chomsky, which was then continued in the works of Canale and Swain and conceptualized for educational purposes by Celce-Murcia, Dornier and Turell. The component composition of the DC includes, according to Celce-Murcia, the categories of connectivity, integrity, conversational structures, compliance with the order in conversation. The Council of Europe’s Language Policy Regulation (CEFR) on the essence of discursive competence, which includes the student’s ability to arrange proposals in the desired sequence, was also considered. Russian linguists and teachers also contributed to the understanding of the recreation center, in particular, N.D. Arutyunova, L.O. Gelivera, A.G. Gorbunov, E.N. Elistratova, N.V. Popova and others. In a generalized form, according to their opinions, the formation of the recreation center includes the creation of coherent statements in compliance with their thematic organization, cohesion and coherence, the interaction of the author with the reader within the functional style required by the communication situation. The novelty of the presented research is to consider the methodology for forming a discursive competence in classes on a foreign language in college, using the author’s textbook on discursive analysis. Experimentally, the author defines the main components of the formation of foreign-language discursive competence of college students and discloses their content for the implementation of oral and written communication of students.

Abstract

The paper highlights the theoretical provisions describing the main methodological approaches to the formation of competencies, which are provided for by modern federal state educational standards of higher education, taking into account professional standards (FGOS HE (3++)) — bachelor’s degree in the areas of training of the enlarged group 090000 Computer Science and Computer engineering: competence, system-activity and information approaches in education and pedagogical science. The differences between the analyzed FGOS in (3++) and earlier educational standards in the aspect of the formed results of educational activity are highlighted. The concept of competence itself is clarified, the views of scientists on the content of this term given in domestic and foreign literature are analyzed. The result of educational activity is considered as a set of competencies formed in the process of educational activity aimed at the implementation and application of professional skills of a future specialist in a certain subject area. Attention is drawn to the possibilities of the listed methodological approaches to the organization and implementation of the educational process in the formation of interdisciplinary and suprasubject competencies, which is required by modern conditions: the future specialist must be competitive, meet the needs of the employer, have opportunities for self-realization, etc. these opportunities are described by the example of curricula adopted for implementation in the Volga State University of Telecommunications and computer science». The necessity of integration of individual approaches in order to effectively implement educational activities is substantiated. It is noted that the need for effective organization of the modern digital educational process requires scientific justification. In this regard, the development of digital didactics, a new and relevant direction of pedagogical science, is being noted today.

The concept of the “pedagogical event” in educational discourse

Dobrova V.V.

Abstract

Clarification of conceptual and terminological apparatus is an urgent task of modern pedagogy, in this connection the paper deals with the concept of “pedagogical event”, as well as its relationship with the main pedagogical categories: education, training and upbringing. Based on the research conducted within the social and human sciences, the integral features of the “event”, such as the significance of changes in the life of the subject and spatial and temporal characteristics were identified, which allowed to define the “pedagogical event” in an interdisciplinary dynamic aspect. One of the main functions of education in the modern world is the transmission of culture from one generation to another, reproduction and development of culture. If the aim of education is understood as the transmission, reproduction and generation of culture, the “pedagogical event” can be defined as a change through adaptation of cultural experience of humanity to the cultural experience of the student, i.e. translation of culture from one person to another.

Abstract

The paper reviews the results of the creative team of teachers and students to explore the possibilities of recycling some construction waste. The analysis of publications in the sphere of ecological design testifies to the constant search of ways of recycling of different types of waste. The authors have focused their attention on the potential of using construction waste, the amount of which increases every year. The purpose of the study is to teach students to design furniture objects using recycled plastic pipes through educational Smart-technologies. The use of new Smart-technologies guarantees the achievement of the desired result. Their implementation was carried out in a “distributed learning environment” in stages. Preparatory stage: study of environmental problems and ways to overcome them, characteristics of construction waste, production and disposal of plastic pipes and existing ways of their recycling. Experimental stage: the study of plastic as a material for the manufacture of pipes, the technology of their manufacture, methods of connection; the development of an artistic and imaginative concept of furniture sets using plastic pipes. The final stage: the study of the possibilities of the project; the production of a prototype of the product in full size. The results of the study can be viewed from two positions: pedagogical and technological. From a pedagogical point of view, it is the promotion of students’ consciousness in the field of environmental design. From the technological point of view — the formulation of methodological recommendations for the design of high-quality products from secondary raw materials.

Soft skills as key competences for successful employability of graduate students

Kuregyan A.L., Khusainova M.A.

Abstract

In modern world, the higher vocational education system must not only be able to promptly respond to the changing demands of different industries for specialists of the required majors, but also to facilitate their rapid employment. Graduates employability is an increasingly important issue. In addition to basic academic and vocational training, graduates are also required to possess flexible skills that are pivotal in transitioning from education to employment. So, for a successful activity, any specialist needs two categories of skills: hard and soft skills. When talking about hard skills, technical knowledge is meant. On the opposite, soft skills refer to communication, team work, creativity, problem solving and other personal skills. Experts agree that beside hard (technical) skills, soft (non-cognitive) skills are necessary. They represent psychological attributes that inform how people learn, think, and act. Measuring soft skills is important because they are variables that allow students to predict their professional future and career orientation. This paper presents the results of studies which have been conducted to identify key competences which today’s graduates should have in order to get a desired job. Main methods and techniques that help to master and improve them are also discussed.

Use of infographics to develop speaking skills of engineering students at English classes

Shvaikina N.S., Popel A.A.

Abstract

Introduction of infographics into tertiary education became widespread during COVID-19 pandemic as the latter triggered a fundamental transition from conventional education to online one. This new format of teaching immediately revealed a few difficulties, such as poor attendance of students, lack of relevant technologies and equipment as well as inability of most educational institutions to respond to these challenges properly. Together with it, we have also discovered that students found it uneasy to learn new material, however, as we believe, it might be improved by introducing new technologies into teaching methodology which can be used both in online and classroom work — for example, to follow up the material which has already been learned online. One of these technologies is infographics. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize readers with infographics as a tool and explain how inforgraphics may contribute to building English speaking skills at technical university. The object of the study in hand is the process of building English speaking skills of students studying at engineering faculties (industrial and civil engineering and construction and technological faculty). The subject of the work is use of infographics to build English speaking skills of students from these faculties in ELT. The practical value of this study is to show how infographics-based exercises could be implemented into English classes for first-year students who study the language at technical university. The research novelty of this study lies in the fact that infographics as a way of visual presentation of various textual, statistical information, data and knowledge is used as a means of teaching a foreign language at the stage of higher education. The results of the research can then be used to teach English to bachelors studying a wide range of engineering degrees, or as part of a refreshing course for non-linguistic masters. In addition, it should be noted that infographics can be used both for classroom and independent work of students.

Pedagogical discourse and communication ethic in policultural virtual educational environment

Rozhkov G.A., Taratuhina Y.V., Tsyganova L.A.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has served as a catalyst for the transition of education to an online format. Clearly, most educational institutions and teachers were forced to adapt methods and forms of online educational process on the short notice. The issue of online education has long been considered from the scientific and practical sides, however, such a quick and forced transition to online revealed the problems, features and potential of online communication. The ethics of online communication in education is one of the most significant issues. The development of the information environment initiated the emergence of an educational multicultural environment, which entailed a certain kind of systemic changes, which, one way or another, will be reflected in the transformation of the elements of the information and educational environment (IEE) organization. This applies to both the traditional format of education and online educational practices. There is a number of specific features of multicultural educational environment that do not occur in monocultural environments: non-identical professional thesauri, various habitual communication patterns with a teacher, representation of educational information and educational content specifics, decision-making specifics, the attitude to creative tasks performing in the process of learning, ambiguous understanding of learning objectives, terminology, preferred type of control and measuring materials, etc.
